AN ACT TO AMEND ACT 36 OF 1967, AS AMENDED, RELATING TO THE SPARTANBURG COUNTY COMMISSION FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, SO AS TO INCREASE ITS MEMBERSHIP FROM SEVEN TO NINE AND TO PROVIDE FOR VACANCIES.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

Membership increased

SECTION 1. Section 1 of Act 36 of 1967 is amended to read:

"Section 1. There is hereby created the Spartanburg County Commission for Higher E education which shall be composed of nine members to be appointed by the Governor on the recommendation of a majority of the members of the House of Representatives from Spartanburg County and the Senators of District 4. The terms of the members shall be for four years and until their successors are appointed and qualify except that four of the initial appointees shall serve for two years only. Vacancies shall be filled in the manner of the initial appointments for the unexpired portion of the terms only.

The Superintendent of Education for Spartanburg County shall be an ex officio member of the Commission.

At their first meeting the commissioners shall elect a chairman, vice-chairman, secretary and treasurer from among their members and shall organize and adopt such rules and procedures as they see fit.

To facilitate its work the Commission may appoint from Spartanburg County, and from such adjacent areas as deemed appropriate, an Educational Advisory Committee consisting of not less than ten nor more than fifteen members which shall meet and consult with the Commission from time to time as may be required. All members of the Commission and of the Educational Advisory Committee shall serve without compensation."

One member appointed for two years

SECTION 2. One of the two additional members appointed pursuant to this act shall serve for two years only.

Time effective

SECTION 3. This act shall take effect upon approval by the Governor.
