AN ACT TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 16-13-16 SO AS TO MAKE IT UNLAWFUL TO FALSIFY OR ALTER CERTAIN DIPLOMAS OR TRANSCRIPTS OR TO USE CERTAIN FALSIFIED OR ALTERED DIPLOMAS OR TRANSCRIPTS WITH THE INTENT TO DEFRAUD OR MISLEAD ANOTHER PERSON, AND TO PROVIDE PENALTIES FOR VIOLATION.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

Unlawful to falsify diplomas

Section 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 16-13-15. It shall be unlawful for any person to falsify or alter a transcript or diploma from any college or university of this State or a state-supported technical college. It shall also be unlawful for any person to use in this State a falsified or altered transcript or diploma from any college, university or technical school with the intent to defraud or mislead another person.

Any person violating the provisions of this section shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction shall be punished by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars or by imprisonment for a term not to exceed one year, or both."

Time effective

Section 2. This act shall take effect upon the approval by the Governor.
