AN ACT TO REAPPORTION THE ELECTION DISTRICTS IN BERKELEY COUNTY FROM WHICH MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE COUNTY ARE ELECTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE UNITED STATES CENSUS OF 1980, TO PROVIDE FOR THE TERMS OF THE MEMBERS ELECTED FROM SUCH DISTRICTS, TO PROVIDE THAT THE SUPERVISOR OF BERKELEY COUNTY SHALL BE ELECTED FOR A TERM OF FOUR YEARS, AND TO REPEAL ACT 290 OF 1977, RELATING TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF SINGLE-MEMBER ELECTION DISTRICTS FOR THE GOVERNING BODY OF BERKELEY COUNTY.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

Reapportionment of election districts of the Berkeley County Council

Section 1. Commencing with the 1982 general election, one member of the governing body of Berkeley County shall be elected from each of the following defined election districts:

Terms

Section 2. The county council of Berkeley County shall consist of eight members elected for terms of four years. Any council member who is serving a four-year term in a district that has been reapportioned and whose term does not expire until two years after reapportionment becomes effective shall be allowed to continue to serve the balance of his unexpired term representing the people in the new reapportioned district if he is an elector in such reapportioned district. In the event that the two or more council members, because of reapportionment, become electors in the same district, an election shall then be required.

Term of supervisor

Section 3. Commencing with the general election of 1982, the supervisor of Berkeley County shall be elected for a term of four years.

Repeal

Section 4. Act 290 of 1977 is repealed.

Time effective

Section 5. This act shall take effect upon the approval by the Governor.
