AN ACT TO PROVIDE FOR THE REAPPORTIONMENT OF SINGLE MEMBER ELECTION DISTRICTS FOR THE ELECTION OF MEMBERS OF THE GREENVILLE COUNTY COUNCIL IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE OFFICIAL UNITED STATES CENSUS OF 1980.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

County council election districts

SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any other provision of law and beginning with the general election of 1982, one member of the Greenville County Council shall be elected from each of the following single member election districts:

Unexpired terms

SECTION 2. Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 1, any member of county council whose term does not expire until two years after reapportionment provided for in that section may continue to serve out his term and if such member is a qualified elector of the reapportioned district no election for the district concerned shall be held in the 1982 general election. If the councilman serving the unexpired term is no longer an elector of the district because of reapportionment, an election shall be held in the district and both the councilman elected from the reapportioned district and the councilman serving the unexpired term shall both serve on council. When vacancy occurs on council other than because of the expiration of term, the vacancy shall be filled by election from the reapportioned district.

Time effective

SECTION 3. This act shall take effect upon approval by the Governor.
