AN ACT TO PROVIDE THAT THE BOYKIN SPANIEL IS THE OFFICIAL DOG OF THE STATE.

Whereas, the Boykin Spaniel is the only dog which was originally bred for South Carolina hunters by South Carolinians; and

Whereas, the Boykin Spaniel has developed into a breed of superb hunting instincts and mild temperament; and

Whereas, the Boykin Spaniels in existence today are the descendants of an original dog bred by Mr. L. Whitaker Boykin of Kershaw County, South Carolina; and

Whereas, the Boykin Spaniels can now be found throughout the United States and are highly regarded as pets and hunting dogs; and

Whereas, the Boykin Spaniel registry is now headquartered in Kershaw County, South Carolina, and has published guidelines for the registry of Spaniels; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Wildlife and Marine Resources Commission endorsed the Boykin Spaniel as South Carolina's State Dog on April 20, 1984; and

Whereas, Richard W. Riley, Governor of the State, proclaimed September 1, 1984, as Boykin Spaniel Day. Now, therefore,Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

Official state dog

SECTION 1. The Boykin Spaniel is the official dog of the State.

Time effective

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon approval by the Governor.
