AN ACT TO AMEND ACT 525 OF 1982, RELATING TO THE ELECTION OF CERTAIN PUBLIC OFFICIALS OF CHESTER COUNTY INCLUDING MEMBERS OF THE CHESTER COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD OF TRUSTEES, SO AS TO REVISE THE MANNER IN WHICH THE CHAIRMAN OF THE SCHOOL BOARD OF TRUSTEES IS SELECTED.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

Chester County school board of trustees

SECTION 1. Section 5 of Act 525 of 1982 is amended to read:

"Section 5. In addition to the six members of the Chester County School Board of Trustees authorized by the provisions of Act 252 of 1979, there is a seventh member of the board who must be elected in the 1982 general election and in the general election every four years thereafter for a term of office of four years and until his successor is elected and qualifies. This member must be elected from the district at large by the qualified electors of the district. The member so elected shall take office on the first day of January following his election. Any vacancy must be filled for the remainder of the unexpired term by election in the same manner as provided for the original election.

In regard to the school board of trustees, this seventh member shall also have the same powers, duties, and authority as the other members of the board."

Board to elect officers

SECTION 2. The Chester County School Board of Trustees at its first meeting each year shall elect one of its members as chairman and another as vice chairman to serve for terms of one year and until their successors are selected.

Time effective

SECTION 3. This act shall take effect upon approval by the Governor.
