AN ACT TO REVISE THE MANNER IN WHICH MEMBERS OF THE BEAUFORT COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION MUST BE ELECTED BEGINNING IN 1988, INCLUDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF SINGLE-MEMBER ELECTION DISTRICTS FROM WHICH CERTAIN MEMBERS OF THE BOARD MUST BE ELECTED, AND TO PROVIDE FOR THE TERMS OF THESE MEMBERS SO ELECTED, AND TO PROVIDE THAT IN THE EVENT MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNING BODY OF BEAUFORT COUNTY ARE ELECTED FROM NINE SINGLE-MEMBER ELECTION DISTRICTS, MEMBERS OF THE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION MUST ALSO BE ELECTED FROM THE SAME NINE DISTRICTS.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

Election of certain members of Beaufort County Board of Education

SECTION 1. Beginning with the 1988 election, one member of the Beaufort County Board of Education must reside in and be elected from each of the following defined single-member election districts by the qualified electors of each district:

At-large election of members

SECTION 2. In addition to the six members of the Beaufort County Board of Education elected in 1988 from the defined single-member election districts established in Section 1, three members of the board must be elected from the county at large. The present members of the board shall continue to serve until the members of the board elected in 1988 take office as provided by law.

Terms

SECTION 3. The members of the board must be elected for terms of four years each and until their successors are elected or appointed and qualify, provided that the members of the board elected in 1988 from Beaufort District 2, Hilton Head District 4, St. Helena District 5, and one member elected at-large must be elected for terms of two years each. The initial terms of the at-large members elected in 1988 must be determined by lot at the first meeting of the members of the board following their election in 1988. After the 1988 election, all members of the board must be elected for terms of four years each. Vacancies occurring on the board for any reason must be filled in the manner provided by law.

Revision of method of election

SECTION 4. In the event that the members of the governing body of Beaufort County are elected from nine defined single-member election districts, a member of the Beaufort County Board of Education must also be elected from each of these nine districts beginning with the next election following the establishment of these nine single-member election districts.

Governing law

SECTION 5. The provisions of law relating to the filing of candidacy, conduct of election, and method of election of members of the board continue to be the same as is now provided by law. The provisions of this act do not affect any other provision of law relating to the

election of members of the Board of Education of Beaufort County not inconsistent with the provisions of this act.

Time effective

SECTION 6. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
