AN ACT TO AMEND ACT 643 OF 1980, AS AMENDED, RELATING TO SCHOOLS IN SUMTER COUNTY, SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT THE ELECTION OF SCHOOL TRUSTEES FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS 2 AND 17 OF SUMTER COUNTY MUST BE HELD AT THE SAME TIME AS THE GENERAL ELECTION.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
Boards of Trustees - Sumter County School Districts
SECTION 1. The first paragraph of Section 1 of Act 643 of 1980 is amended to read:
"The boards of trustees of School Districts 2 and 17 of Sumter County consist of seven qualified electors of each school district to be elected in nonpartisan elections by the qualified electors of the districts at the same time as each general election. The terms of the trustees are for four years and until their successors are elected and qualify, the terms to commence January first following their election. Vacancies must be filled by appointment of the Governor upon recommendation of the remaining trustees of the district for the unexpired portion of the term only."
Conduct of election
SECTION 2. Section 4 of Act 643 of 1980 is amended to read:
"Section 4. The county election commission shall conduct the elections, appoint the managers of the election, designate the places of election, receive in writing the returns of the managers, and declare the results."
Terms of members
SECTION 3. Section 6 of Act 643 of 1980 is amended to read:
"Section 6. The terms of the members of Districts 2 and 17 boards of trustees whose terms expire in 1990 are extended to January 1, 1991."
Repeal
SECTION 4. Section 5 of Act 643 of 1980 is repealed.
Time effective
SECTION 5. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
