A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING JOHN CANNADY, FORMER PLAYER WITH THE NEW YORK GIANTS OF THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE, ON HIS RECENT INDUCTION INTO THE SOUTH CAROLINA ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME.

Whereas, John Cannady, Charleston native and resident, played college football for the Indiana University Hoosiers, where he earned All-Big 10 honors as a linebacker; and

Whereas, when his college playing career was over, Big John Cannady became the No. 2 draft choice of the New York Giants of the National Football League; and

Whereas, Big John played eight seasons for the Giants (from 1947-54) in the NFL, where he pioneered the position of middle linebacker; and

Whereas, he was named All-Pro three times and played in the NFL's first Pro Bowl in 1950 in Los Angeles; and

Whereas, several years ago he was named to the Indiana University all-time football team; and

Whereas, he was a dedicated and very talented player who toiled in the NFL for the sheer love of the game; and

Whereas, he left football after 1954 because of knee problems, returned to Charleston, and opened "Big John's", a local resort on East Bay Street where his unique hospitality is extended to and enjoyed by all; and

Whereas, he was recently inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame along with five other prominent athletic figures; and

Whereas, Big John Cannady had a truly distinguished playing career and is an outstanding individual who is greatly deserving of recognition. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates John Cannady, former player with the New York Giants of the National Football League, on his recent induction into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Big John Cannady.
