TO COMMEND CITY OF CHARLESTON FIRE CHIEF WILMOT E. GUTHKE FOR HIS FORTY-THREE YEARS OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO THE CHARLESTON FIRE DEPARTMENT AND FOR HIS TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF SERVICE AS CHIEF UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have learned with regret that Fire Chief Wilmot E. Guthke of the City of Charleston Fire Department will be retiring in early January after having completed twenty-five years of service as chief and a total of forty-three years service with the department; and
Whereas, Chief Guthke joined the department in 1948, became a captain in 1959, and a battalion chief in 1961, was named second assistant chief in 1964 and in January, 1967 became chief; and
Whereas, during his tenure as chief, the department's budget increased fivefold, fire insurance ratings for many areas of the city improved, and five new stations were built; and
Whereas, Chief Guthke is without question the finest chief that the fire department of the City of Charleston, which is this country's oldest fire department, ever had; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly believe that it would be a fitting tribute to this outstanding firefighter for the Charleston City Council to name Chief Guthke as Fire Chief Emeritus of the department; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would also like to thank this fine South Carolinian for his tremendous service to his city, county, and State upon the occasion of his retirement. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly hereby commend City of Charleston Fire Chief Wilmot C. Guthke for his forty-three years of distinguished service to the Charleston Fire Department and for his twenty-five years of service as chief upon the occasion of his retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Chief Guthke.
