TO EXPRESS THE SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF DR. LAWRENCE G. DERTHICK, JR., SUMTER SCHOOL DISTRICT 17 SUPERINTENDENT, WHO DIED ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 3, 1992.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Dr. Lawrence G. Derthick, Jr., Sumter School District 17 Superintendent, who died on Friday, January 3, 1992; and
Whereas, the loss of this special administrator will create a void in educational leaders which will be felt in Sumter County as well as state and federal levels; and
Whereas, Dr. Derthick's death was such a great loss to the Sumter community, not only because he was an outstanding spokesman on administration but because he was a leader who worked to improve the community in many other ways; and
Whereas, Lawrence Derthick distinguished himself as a respected educator and community leader with his accomplishments spanning four decades reflecting a lifetime of dedicated service, hard work, and devotion to public education; and
Whereas, he had over twenty-four years' experience as a superintendent, more than any other superintendent in South Carolina; and
Whereas, with his arrival in Sumter School District 17 in 1982, he almost immediately was held as an energetic, personally involved administrator with a strong commitment to education; and
Whereas, Dr. Derthick was named South Carolina Superintendent of the Year for 1989-90 by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators and in 1991 was presented the statewide William B. Harley Administrator of the Year Award; and
Whereas, he maintained numerous affiliations with professional organizations and was honored with special recognition, too numerous to mention in this resolution. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly wish to express their sympathy to the family and friends of Dr. Lawrence G. Derthick, Jr., Sumter School District 17 Superintendent, who died on Friday, January 3, 1992.
