A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND PEARL F. FRYAR OF BISHOPVILLE FOR HIS MANY AWARDS AND EXCELLENT WORK IN LANDSCAPING, GARDENING, AND PLANT PROPAGATION AND IN PARTICULAR HIS SCULPTURE TOPIARY GARDEN.

Whereas, Pearl F. Fryar of Bishopville began his skills in earnest in 1984 with the dream of winning Bishopville's Yard of the Month; and

Whereas, in three years, Mr. Fryar and his wife, Metra, achieved that goal by landscaping and sculpting their one and one-half acre yard; and

Whereas, Mr. Fryar uses his creative talent in developing the shapes to sculpt the hedges and does not utilize any pictures; and

Whereas, the shapes include "poodle bobbed" or precisely shaped abstract figures, twists, and geometric and animal forms, as well as the traditional shapes such as hearts, etc.; and

Whereas, in addition to Mr. Fryar's topiary skills, he has added cement and brick work for an inlay pattern of walks throughout his estate; and

Whereas, his yard has been used by the Arts Council, was host to Art Exhibitors and Garden Tours, was featured on WBTW-13 and WIS Television, P.M. Magazine, South Carolina Educational Television, and Southern Living Magazine, as well as numerous newspaper articles in Bishopville, Sumter, and Lee County, the Atlanta Constitution, and The State; and

Whereas, Mr. Fryar's membership on the Lee County Arts Council helped to raise money for the renovation of the old Opera House in Bishopville by hosting a fund raiser, "Harvest Artistic Garden Tour"; and

Whereas, in addition to his achievements and contributions in the horticulture area, Mr. Fryar also is an active member of the Lee County Mental Retardation Board, the Lee County Vocational School Advisory Council, and the County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse; and

Whereas, Mr. Fryar continues his employment with the American National Can Company. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly commends Mr. Pearl F. Fryar of Bishopville for his many awards and achievements in landscaping, gardening, and plant propagation and on his sculptured topiary garden.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Pearl F. Fryar and his wife.
