Whereas, on August 20, 1964, Congress enacted the Economic Opportunity Act, our country's declaration of "war on poverty"; and
Whereas, the Community Action Agency was created to lead the fight against poverty in local communities, offering "a hand up, not a hand out"; and
Whereas, on March 11, 1966, the Beaufort-Jasper Economic Opportunity Commission received its corporate charter as a community action agency for these counties; and
Whereas, for over twenty-five years the Beaufort-Jasper Economic Opportunity Commission has been a leader in our state's "war on poverty", helping to meet the needs of thousands of families and individuals with food, shelter, education, health care, illiteracy, unemployment, and discrimination; and
Whereas, during the twenty-five years the Beaufort-Jasper Economic Opportunity Commission has served the bi-county area, it has stimulated economic growth and development by bringing more than twenty-five million dollars into these counties; and
Whereas, the Beaufort-Jasper Economic Opportunity Commission has been a leader in developing innovative and cost-effective programs and has maximized resources through close coordination and working relationships with other local agencies; and
Whereas, the Beaufort-Jasper Economic Opportunity Commission remains strongly committed to the citizens of Beaufort and Jasper counties, to their children, elderly, working poor and other disadvantaged persons; and
Whereas, the Beaufort-Jasper Economic Opportunity Commission has rededicated its efforts, resources, and leadership to continue the struggle to overcome poverty; and
Whereas, this State also must continue to uphold its commitment to wage war against poverty for the paradox of poverty in the midst of plenty continues today. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
