A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND REVEREND ROSCOE C. WILSON, SR., PASTOR OF SAINT JOHN BAPTIST CHURCH IN COLUMBIA, FOR HIS FORTY-FOUR YEARS OF UNSELFISH AND DEDICATED LEADERSHIP OF THIS OUTSTANDING CHURCH, AND TO EXTEND TO HIM BEST WISHES ON THE OCCASION OF HIS SEVENTY-FIRST BIRTHDAY.

Whereas, Reverend Roscoe C. Wilson, Sr., is the pastor of Saint John Baptist Church in Columbia having been called to this pastorate in March of 1948; and

Whereas, Saint John Baptist Church is an integral part of the Columbia community. It has not only manifested itself as a cordial, friendly, and sacred place of worship, but it has served as an outstanding influence in evangelizing the surrounding communities in which it operates. It is concerned with the spiritual, social, political, and economic welfare of the people, both within and outside of the realm of its own membership; and

Whereas, Roscoe Wilson was born on March 27, 1921, in Seguin, Texas, in 1946, he entered Benedict College where he earned the Bachelor of Arts degree, in 1952 he received the Bachelor of Divinity degree from J. J. Starks School of Theology at Benedict College, and on March 27, 1992, celebrated his seventy-first birthday; and

Whereas, under his leadership a new sanctuary has been built and then subsequently renovated, property purchases of over one million dollars were made, the annual budget of the church increased tenfold, membership increased over fivefold and the church operates a preschool program which has a citywide reputation for excellence; and

Whereas, one key ingredient of Reverend Wilson's success as a pastor and minister was his lovely wife, the former Ethel Celeste Williams of Columbia, who was his partner and confidante until her death; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to wish Reverend Wilson a very happy birthday and would also like to publicly recognize and thank this gifted man of God for his unselfish and dedicated ministry to this fine church and to the many members and friends of the congregation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby commend Reverend Roscoe C. Wilson, Sr., pastor of Saint John Baptist Church in Columbia, for his forty-four years of unselfish and dedicated leadership of this outstanding church, and extend to him best wishes on the occasion of his seventy-first birthday.
