A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE SOUTH CAROLINA STATE COLLEGE UPON ITS REACCREDITATION BY THE SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS WITHOUT THE REQUIREMENT OF A FOLLOW-UP INSPECTION.

Whereas, at its ninety-fifth annual conference, the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) confirmed the reaccreditation of South Carolina State College for another ten years; and

Whereas, while State College expected to be fully reaccredited, this reaffirmation was unprecedented as it carried with it the "no follow-up necessary" stipulation and is the first time in the history of the college that reaccreditation was accomplished at such a level; and

Whereas, State College was one of only two institutions to be so distinguished among the twenty-eight institutions that were reaccredited in the Southern region; and

Whereas, SACS accredits schools in eleven southeastern states as well as American schools in Latin America. Other South Carolina schools with SACS accreditation include Furman University, the University of South Carolina, Clemson University, and Charleston Southern; and

Whereas, State College underwent its on-site evaluation in February, 1990, which took the form of an intensive look at the college's present level of performance, with implications for future growth, and the committee of professionals who visited the campus was more than impressed with the overall current quality of operations and plans for growth found there; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and congratulate this fine institution of higher learning upon the occasion of its truly deserved reaccreditation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby congratulate South Carolina State College upon its reaccreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools without the requirement of a follow-up inspection.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Albert E. Smith, President of South Carolina State College.
