A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE SUMTER HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND, DIRECTED BY MR. JOE ALLISON, ON BEING SELECTED A WINNER OF THE PRESTIGIOUS SUDLER SHIELD INTERNATIONAL MARCHING BAND AWARD FOR 1993.

Whereas, The John Philip Sousa Foundation has announced that the Sumter High School Marching Band is a winner of the prestigious Sudler Shield international marching band award for 1993; and

Whereas, only one other high school marching band in the country was selected to receive this award; and

Whereas, the Sudler Shield marching band awards are designed to recognize very outstanding high school marching bands at the international level of world class marching performance; and

Whereas, nominees for this award are invited to submit materials which are evaluated by a jury composed of eminent marching band directors who have attained success in marching band activities at the national and international levels, and the selection for the award is made by the selection committee viewing video tapes; and

Whereas, the Sumter High Marching Band is truly one of the best marching bands to be found anywhere and has won the Lower State band competition for the past four years and was the 1993 runner-up in the South Carolina Band Competition; and

Whereas, the Sumter band has won numerous other awards and honors over the years and is clearly deserving of the recognition bestowed upon it by the John Philip Sousa Foundation; and

Whereas, the Sumter High School Marching Band is under the excellent direction of Mr. Joe Allison, who is assisted in an outstanding fashion by Brian Lambeth and Joni Brown; and

Whereas, the greatly talented young men and women who comprise the Sumter band have every right to be proud of their hard work, dedication, unity, and accomplishments, and the members of the General Assembly are pleased to be able to recognize and congratulate them in this instance. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates the Sumter High School Marching Band, directed by Mr. Joe Allison, on being selected a winner of the prestigious Sudler Shield international marching band award for 1993.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Sumter High School Marching Band, in care of Mr. Joe Allison, director.
