A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 16-11-770 SO AS TO MAKE IT A MISDEMEANOR OFFENSE TO MAKE A COPY OF CERTAIN KEYS OR TO CAUSE A COPY OF CERTAIN KEYS TO BE MADE, AND TO PROVIDE A PENALTY.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 16-11-770. It is unlawful for a person to make a copy of a key which is marked `do not copy' or which contains similar prohibitory wording. A person who causes a copy of the key to be made is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be fined not more than one hundred dollars or imprisoned not more than thirty days, or both.

Each separate copy made of a key described in this section is a violation."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
