A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

COMMENDING AMERICAN FEDERAL BANK OF GREENVILLE FOR ITS OUTSTANDING RECORD OF CIVIC INVOLVEMENT AND COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT.

Whereas, American Federal Bank of Greenville has long been active in the community in numerous ways; and

Whereas, the bank has help sponsor the Black Heritage Bowl, which is an academic competition in celebration of African-American culture and achievement; the bowl has grown from ten teams to eighty teams since 1991; the three-day event had approximately 1,500 spectators; the bank provided funds to purchase a buzzer system for the competition, and American Federal's Ernest Irby spoke during the competition; and

Whereas, American Federal Bank's Kent Dill received an award from the State Board of Education for contributions to public education in South Carolina; the nomination specifically mentions his volunteer work as chairman of the board for "Cities in Schools", which is a collaborative effort of business, the community, education, and health and human services agencies to prevent school drop-outs; and

Whereas, the bank provided a sponsorship in the amount of $4,000 for the 1992-93 season of Theatre on the Green in Greenville; and

Whereas, Greenville Housing Futures, Inc. (GHF), received an award for its service to the low-to-moderate income community in Greenville from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta; American Federal nominated GHF for the award and held a press conference to cover the awards presentation; American Federal's Charles M. Werner serves on the board of GHF; and

Whereas, the bank participated in the Southern Home and Garden Show, which was held at the Palmetto Expo Center in Greenville; American Federal mortgage loan officers answered questions on construction and permanent loans while consumer loan officers answered questions about loans for home improvement and second mortgages, and the bank's Jim May conducted an educational seminar on equity loans; and

Whereas, the bank participated in the March of Dimes"Boot" spot campaign; Mr. W.L. (Roy) Abercrombie, who is the bank's president and chief executive officer, and four American Federal March of Dimes volunteers recorded a thirty-second public service announcement to be aired on WSPA during a two-month period; the spot was designed to encourage other businesses to form teams and raise money for the March of Dimes; American Federal was featured in the public service announcement because the bank was the top 1992 fundraiser in the Upstate and won the Upstate "Boot Award" again for 1993; the bank raised over $89,000 for the March of Dimes; and

Whereas, Robert (Bob) Simonet represented American Federal at the Habitat for Humanity celebration dinner held to honor organizations and individuals for their contributions to this worthwhile program; and

Whereas, American Federal Bank has participated in many other civic endeavors beyond the ones mentioned here, such as "Life Enrichment Financial Health Check", Deputy of the Year sponsorship, "Centre Stage South Carolina Business Buddy", and Sirrine Elementary School Parenting Workshop sponsorship, just to name a few; and

Whereas, clearly American Federal Bank is a bank that cares about the community and its citizens; and

Whereas, the excellent directors, officers, and employees of the bank never hesitate to help and invest in the community in a way that inspires, uplifts, educates, and heals; and

Whereas, American Federal Bank of Greenville is a model bank which is greatly deserving of recognition and commendation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring: That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, highly commends American Federal Bank of Greenville for its outstanding record of civic involvement and community improvement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to American Federal Bank, in care of Mr. W. L. (Roy) Abercrombie, President and Chief Executive Officer, and Mr. John M. Hilley, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, P.O. Box 1268, Greenville 29602-1268.
