A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE GRATITUDE AND APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE TO ELDER DAN L. SMITH OF GILLISONVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA, FOR HIS LIFETIME OF DEDICATION, COMMITMENT, AND SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF HIS COMMUNITY AND THIS STATE, AND ESPECIALLY FOR HIS ROLE IN PROVIDING TRANSPORTATION FOR BLACK SCHOOL CHILDREN IN JASPER COUNTY IN THE 1940'S.

Whereas, Elder Dan L. Smith of Gillisonville, South Carolina, purchased a school bus with his own money for the 1947-48 school year in order to provide transportation for the black children of the county; and

Whereas, without Elder Smith's bus many of these children would have had to walk as far as five miles one way to school each day; and

Whereas, although the bus was only a fifty-four passenger bus, eithty students were picked up in the communities of Possum Corner, Grays, Woodsville, Langsfordville, Gillisonville, and Coosawatchie; and

Whereas, Elder Smith's commitment and dedication to the education of children was instrumental in helping the first year of busing become a success for the community; and

Whereas, Dan Smith also pursued his own education and in 1958 he received his diploma from a two-year technical school and became a licensed electrician. For ten of his thirty retired years at the E. I. DuPont Company he worked as an electrical welder. He is the sole proprietor of the Smith Electric Company and is an experienced carpenter, plumber, and automotive repairman; and

Whereas, Elder Smith has served his community and country in many ways; and

Whereas, he is an honorably discharged United States Navy Veteran and Petty Officer, whose time of service included World War II, for which he received six campaign ribbons and three bronze stars for duties performed in three major battles and combat zones; and

Whereas, Dan Smith is the Presiding Elder of the South Eastern District of the Pentecostal Faith Churches, and has been the pastor of Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Faith Church in Gillisonville for forty-two years; and

Whereas, Elder Smith is the Executive Committeeman for the Democratic Party in the Gillisonville Precinct, a member and Secretary of the Jasper County Ministers' Alliance Association, and has given many years of service to the NAACP. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their gratitude and appreciation to Elder Dan L. Smith of Gillisonville, South Carolina, for his lifetime of dedication, commitment, and service to the people of his community and this State and especially for his role in providing transportation for black school children in Jasper County in the 1940's.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Elder Dan L. Smith of Gillisonville, South Carolina.
