TO RECOGNIZE MRS. MIRANDA HOLMES FOR HER SELFLESS DEDICATION TO FAMILY, COMMUNITY, AND CHURCH AND TO CELEBRATE THE LOVE SHE SO FREELY GIVES TO OTHERS.
Whereas, Mrs. Miranda Holmes was born in Sumter County but has long been a resident of Charleston, South Carolina; and
Whereas, Mrs. Holmes is the wife of the late Mr. James Holmes; and
Whereas, Mrs. Holmes is the mother of four children and grandmother of four; and
Whereas, Mrs. Holmes graduated from Burke High School and continued her quest for knowledge by studying religion at the College of Charleston and The Baptist Center; and
Whereas, Mrs. Holmes has dedicated much of her life to being involved with her community, helping the less fortunate and deprived; and
Whereas, Mrs. Holmes retired from Charleston's Department of Leisure Services and since that time has shown her compassion to care for others by volunteering her time, talent and love to many organizations; and
Whereas, Mrs. Holmes has served in various capacities on countless boards and organizations that are geared toward helping others; and
Whereas, Mrs. Holmes has worked with area hospitals, the City of Charleston's Care Alert Program, the Elder Support Line and the Crime Watch Program; and
Whereas, it is due in no small part to the efforts of Mrs. Holmes that the Elder Support Line was established; and
Whereas, Mrs. Holmes is also a member of the Sickle Cell Anemia Advisory Board; and
Whereas, Mrs. Holmes is also a member of Governor David Beasley's Low Income Energy Assistance Advisory Board;
Whereas, Mrs. Holmes has volunteered some 5,000 hours to the United States Veterans Administration; and
Whereas, Mrs. Holmes is also a volunteer at the Hollings Cancer Clinic on a regular basis; and
Whereas, in her volunteer capacity at the Hollings Cancer Clinic, Mrs. Holmes offers a unique perspective, as she is a survivor of cancer, herself; and
Whereas, Mrs. Holmes has participated in countless programs that give food and other assistance to the less fortunate; and
Whereas, Mrs. Holmes has also played a very active role in politics and she is a very well respected Democrat; and
Whereas, Mrs. Holmes has devoted countless hours to her church, and has earned the prestigious Missionary Fifty Year Service Pin and a listing among A.M.E. missionary legends; and
Whereas, Mrs. Holmes has earned some 94 awards, plaques, recognitions and citations; and
Whereas, prominent among her awards is the prestigious Lou Grey Award which she receive in 1986; and
Whereas, the Lou Grey Award is a statewide award given to an older person who exemplifies the possibilities of living life in its fullness and inspires others in the continued enrichment of their lives; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly would like to publicly recognize and give a very heart felt appreciation to Mrs. Miranda Holmes for her tireless devotion to family, community and church. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the General Assembly, by this resolution, recognizes the tremendous debt of gratitude owed to Mrs. Miranda Holmes for her undaunted efforts to help others in whatever capacity she can, and would like to thank Mrs. Miranda Holmes for never failing to be there for others during times of need.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Miranda Holmes.
