A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF DR. I.W. CANUPP OF LAKE CITY AND EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dr. I.W. Canupp on Christmas Day, December 25, 1997, at the age of seventy-four; and

Whereas, Dr. Canupp was born in Chester, the son of the late Clark Monroe Canupp and Iva Hardin Canupp; and

Whereas, Dr. Canupp was a graduate of Conway High School and Logan School of Chiropractic in St. Louis, Missouri; and

Whereas, Dr. Canupp moved to Lake City in 1952 and served the community for more than forty years as a chiropractor and a pioneer for the mentally disabled; and

Whereas, Dr. Canupp was named Chiropractor of the Year for South Carolina in 1968; and

Whereas, Dr. Canupp, spurred by his son Don's injury at birth in 1965 that resulted in brain damage, dedicated the remainder of his life to helping the mentally disabled; and

Whereas, Dr. Canupp was truly committed to promoting and providing better educational opportunities and facilities for the mentally disabled by initiating special education classes in the local school districts and organizing groups dedicated to serving the disabled; and

Whereas, Dr. Canupp was named the "Humanitarian of the Year" in November of 1997 by the City of Lake City to honor his numerous achievements and accomplishments on behalf of the mentally disabled; and

Whereas, Dr. Canupp was recently honored by the dedication of the "I.W. Canupp Center" in Lake City; and

Whereas, Dr. Canupp was a member of the American Chiropractic Association, the Lake City Rotary Club, the American Legion and the Florence County Disabilities and Special Needs Board where he served as Chairman; and

Whereas, Dr. Canupp was also a Deacon of Lake City Presbyterian Church, President of J. D. Whitehead Sunday School Class, Past Grand Master of the Lake City Lodge #193 A.F.M. and an officer in the Omar Shrine Temple of Charleston. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express profound sorrow at the death of Dr. I.W. Canupp and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Dr. I.W. Canupp.
