A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING EVETTA BIGGERS JOHNSON OF CHARLESTON COUNTY ON WINNING THE MILKEN FAMILY FOUNDATION NATIONAL EDUCATOR AWARD AND COMMENDING HER FOR HER DEDICATION TO EXCELLENCE IN PUBLIC EDUCATION.

Whereas, Evetta Biggers Johnson of Charleston County has been awarded a $25,000 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award; and

Whereas, Mrs. Johnson is a third grade teacher at Minnie Hughes Elementary School in Yonges Island; and

Whereas, she is an outstanding teacher; she has been described in The Post and Courier as wanting her students to be informed about every aspect of a subject -- "to explore each crevice and angle" -- and as having an affinity for any student who needs extra help; and

Whereas, Mrs. Johnson devotes countless hours outside the classroom to school-related committees; and

Whereas, she loves her students dearly and strives each and every day to instill a love for learning in all of her pupils; and

Whereas, the award which has been bestowed upon her has been given to outstanding educators since 1985 by the Milken Family Foundation, which is based in Los Angeles, California; in 1997 the foundation will honor 138 educators in thirty-two states; Mrs. Johnson is among four such honorees in South Carolina this year; and

Whereas, we are tremendously appreciative of her efforts in public education and proud of her success; she has brought honor not only upon herself but also upon her school, school district, the County of Charleston, and the Palmetto State; she is highly deserving of commendation and we are happy to have this opportunity to recognize her. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the Senate, by this resolution, congratulates Evetta Biggers Johnson of Charleston County on winning the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award and commends her for her dedication to excellence in public education.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Johnson.
