A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING SPARTANBURG HIGH SCHOOL'S VARSITY FOOTBALL VIKINGS AND THEIR HEAD COACH, DOC DAVIS, AND HIS STAFF FOR A THIRD CONSECUTIVE STATE BIG 16 CHAMPIONSHIP EARNED WITH A 28-6 VICTORY OVER PREVIOUSLY UNDEFEATED AND TOP-RANKED ROCK HILL AT CLEMSON MEMORIAL STADIUM SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1996.

Whereas, the Spartanburg High School Vikings defeated previously unbeaten and top-ranked Rock Hill by a score of 28-6 at Clemson Memorial Stadium Saturday, December 7, 1996, to win their third straight state Big 16 championship; and

Whereas, the Vikings are only the second Big 16 team in state history to pull off that "three-peat"; and

Whereas, they accomplished the feat with an almost new lineup which made up for resiliency, speed, and execution whatever it may have lacked in talent and size; and

Whereas, the third consecutive title could not have been accomplished without the dedication, hard work, and commitment of the players and Coach Doc Davis and his staff of skilled assistants; and

Whereas, the win handed Coach Davis his fourth state championship, placing him in the ranks of only eight other high school coaching legends in this State; and

Whereas, the Vikings and their coaches overcame heartbreaking regular season losses to Dorman and Rock Hill to win close game after close game in posting a 13-2 championship season; and

Whereas, the Vikings refused to rest on their laurels but committed themselves to another championship run, fulfilling their belief in their "Team of Destiny". Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of South Carolina recognize and congratulate Spartanburg High School's varsity football Vikings and their head coach, Doc Davis, and his staff for a third consecutive State Big 16 championship earned with a 28-6 victory over previously undefeated and top-ranked Rock Hill at Clemson Memorial Stadium Saturday, December 7, 1996.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Spartanburg High School Head Football Coach Doc Davis.
