A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AT THE DEATH OF THE REVEREND SAMUEL MITCHELL MOORE, JR., OF CHESTER AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the Reverend Samuel Mitchell Moore, Jr., of Chester died Sunday, March 16, 1997, at the age of eighty-four; and

Whereas, Reverend Moore graduated from the Brainerd Institute, attended Morgan State, and graduated from Johnson C. Smith University and from the Interdenominational Theological Seminary in Atlanta; and

Whereas, he began his ministry at Carmel Presbyterian Church in Chester and then taught at the Old Torbit School and Chester Junior High School, retiring after twenty-three years; and

Whereas, he was pastor of Bethlehem First United Presbyterian Church in McConnells for more than thirty years and served as supply minister for numerous other churches throughout South Carolina; he also organized and chartered Love Presbyterian Church in 1984 and served there until his death; and

Whereas, he also served as president of the Ministers Alliance of Chester, was charter president of the Chester NAACP, helped to organize the Voters League of Chester, and was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Lodge No. 4 R.A.M., Masonic Cephus Lodge No. 20, Chester Optimist Club, AP&B Lodge No. 12, and CB&A Society No. 20; and

Whereas, Samuel Mitchell Moore, Jr., was one of the most prominent and active citizens of Chester; he was known, respected, and admired across the State; he deeply cared for others and their well-being; he left his mark through his splendid humanitarianism and will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express sorrow at the death of the Reverend Samuel Mitchell Moore, Jr., of Chester and extend deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Reverend Moore's family.
