A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE NORTH CHARLESTON "COUGARS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND THEIR COACHES ON AN EXCEPTIONAL SEASON AND ON WINNING THE 1996-97 CLASS 6-AAAA STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, the North Charleston Boys Basketball Team completed the 1996-97 season with a final record of 29-1 and were undefeated at home 13-0 at the Blue Dome; and

Whereas, the Cougars of North Charleston High defeated a very fine Lexington High School team 60-46 to clinch the 1996-97 Class 6-AAAA State Basketball Championship in Columbia; and

Whereas, the Cougars also won the following: Champions of the Goodwill Games in Lake City, Florida, June 1-3, 1996; Champions of the College of Charleston Team Camp, June 21-24, 1996; and James Island Invitational Champions, December 2-6, 1996; and

Whereas, Head Coaches Jody Rabon and Tony Eady, along with Assistant Coaches T. G. Palmer and Tom Harley, are to be commended for their hard work and dedication by guiding the Cougars through a magnificent season; and

Whereas, it is highly unusual, but Head Coaches Jody Rabon and Tony Eady both played basketball for North Charleston High School -- Coach Rabon played in the late 1960's and Coach Eady played for Coach Rabon in the early 1980's; and

Whereas, the "Running Cougars" team includes: Seniors, Corey McQueen, Darnell Middleton, and Marco Simpson; Juniors, William Beaufort, Dustin Braddick, Antwan Burnell, Desi Ferguson, Desharon Heyward, Damien Kinloch, and Delbert Smalls; Sophomore Clary Judge; and Freshmen, Jermain Hartwell and Karl Johnson; and

Whereas, the coaches, parents, students, and school administration have provided the support and encouragement necessary to attain this highest level of consistent achievement; and

Whereas, the accomplishments of the "Running Cougars" this season both on and off the court have brought deserved recognition and credit not only upon the members of the team and their school but upon their community and county as well; and

Whereas, the General Assembly and all the citizens of South Carolina are extremely proud of these fine young athletes' unity and superb talent during the 1996-97 season. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extend congratulations to the North Charleston "Cougars" Boys Basketball Team on an exceptional season and on winning the 1996-97 Class 6-AAAA State Basketball Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Head Coaches Jody Rabon and Tony Eady and to Principal Tommy Mullins.
