A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE NEWS OF KINGSTREE ON THE AWARDS IT WON AT THE SOUTH CAROLINA PRESS ASSOCIATION'S 1997 WINTER MEETING.

Whereas, The News of Kingstree won three awards at the South Carolina Press Association's 1997 winter meeting in Columbia in February; and

Whereas, the newspaper won third place for best newspaper web site in South Carolina; the editor of The News, Linda Brown, received a second place award for feature writing for her story, "Kingstree Mourns the Passing of Matthew Gardner"; and Ms. Brown and former staff reporter Leslie Rummel placed second in reporting in depth for their series of articles on the Williamsburg Enterprise Community's naming of an executive director; and

Whereas, the newspaper's Internet site, designed by publisher Vickey Boyd and by Joey Staton, Network Manager with Williamsburg Computer--Net Alley, placed behind only The Post and Courier of Charleston and The State of Columbia in the web site competition; and

Whereas, also, Ms. Boyd was named Treasurer for the South Carolina Press Association for 1997; and

Whereas, there was strong competition for these various awards; the honors received by The News are prestigious and bring about much favorable recognition; The News clearly is an excellent newspaper and deserving of commendation for its dedication, hard work, and high journalistic standards; and we are pleased to have this opportunity to recognize The News of Kingstree in a special way. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates The News of Kingstree on the awards it won at the South Carolina Press Association's 1997 winter meeting.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to The News of Kingstree.
