A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

SALUTING REVEREND JULIAN BOYD GAMBLE AND HIS LOVELY WIFE, MRS. HARRIET HARDEN GAMBLE, OF CLARENDON COUNTY FOR THEIR MANY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO EDUCATION, COMMUNITY, AND CHURCH.

Whereas, Julian Boyd Gamble met Harriet Harden while he was teaching at East Clarendon High School and she was teaching in Cades, South Carolina; they were married in 1942 as he was preparing to go with his infantry outfit to fight in Europe in World War II; and

Whereas, after the war, they settled in Turbeville; Harriet Harden Gamble continued to teach high school English, and eventually Julian Gamble became the principal of East Clarendon High School; the Gambles resumed leadership positions in the Turbeville Southern Methodist Church; and

Whereas, as a result of their hard work and commitment to the Turbeville church, in the spring of 1964, Julian Gamble answered the call to the ministry by accepting the call to serve as the pastor of the Hilda Southern Methodist Church in Hilda, South Carolina; in 1967 the Board of Directors of Southern Methodist College in Orangeburg elected Reverend Gamble its president; from 1967-74, the college flourished because of the work of the Gambles; and

Whereas, in 1974, Reverend Gamble was elected to the position of Denominational President, in which office he capably served until 1982; his efforts caused the denomination to grow in every way; and

Whereas, from 1982-86, the Gambles accepted the pastoral call to the Goodlettsville Southern Methodist Church in Goodlettsville, Tennessee; in 1986, they accepted a call to serve the Leesville Southern Methodist Church in Clinton, South Carolina, where they served until their retirement in 1990; upon his formal retirement, Reverend and Mrs. Gamble moved back to Turbeville; and

Whereas, since 1992, the Gambles have been busy serving as Interim Supply Pastor for several churches; Reverend Gamble is currently serving as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Southern Methodist College, and they both remain active in the Douglas Post of the American Legion, Turbeville Hut; and

Whereas, Reverend and Mrs. Gamble have loved and served community and church for many years; everyone who knows them loves them and admires them for their work and dedication; they are an amazing couple and outstanding individuals, and we are delighted to be able to recognize and honor them. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, salutes Reverend Julian Boyd Gamble and his lovely wife, Mrs. Harriet Harden Gamble, of Clarendon County for their many years of outstanding and dedicated service to education, community, and church.
