A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE AND EXTEND THE HEARTFELT APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO MRS. ANN COUNCIL OF DARLINGTON COUNTY UPON BEING NAMED THE 1996 SOUTH CAROLINA SCHOOL NURSE OF THE YEAR AND TO COMMEND HER FOR HER COMMITMENT TO HEALTH EDUCATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, Mrs. Ann Council of Darlington, South Carolina, has been selected as the 1996 South Carolina School Nurse of the Year and now is a contender for the National Association of School Nurses' School Nurse of the Year Award; and

Whereas, Ann Council is a native of Horry County and as an elementary student she told others she would never become a nurse. But once in high school, she fell in love with chemistry and biology and to this day credits her guidance counselor with directing this interest into a career in the nursing field; and

Whereas, after attending McLeod Infirmary School of Nursing, Mrs. Council worked for several years as the Head Nurse in the Medical-Surgery Unit of McLeod Infirmary, was associated with a family practicioner, and a dentist -- shortly after moving to Darlington in 1966, she joined the Darlington County School District; and

Whereas, after convincing the school district administration of the importance of having a school-based nurse on staff, Mrs. Council was the first school-based nurse in Darlington County; and

Whereas, she has been a school nurse for more than thirty-one years with the Darlington County School District; and

Whereas, Ann Council is a vanguard in health education and highly respected by her colleagues; and

Whereas, Mrs. Council directs and supervises five school-based nurses in providing preventive care, health screenings, counseling students about health issues, substance abuse, and countless other tasks too numerous to list ; and

Whereas, Ann Council serves as a role model to her profession and has had a positive impact on the careers of numerous young people within her community. The most rewarding part of her job is to see her former students grow into mature and successful adults; and,

Whereas, not only is she a dedicated wife and mother, she is a devoted nurse, friend, advisor, and listener to countless individuals; and

Whereas, we are extremely proud of Mrs. Ann Council; she is an outstanding individual and an excellent nurse; she has given freely and most generously of her time and talents to the people of her community, county, and this great State; and we are greatly pleased to have this opportunity to salute her and accord her special recognition for her commitment to health education in South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina hereby congratulate and extend heartfelt appreciation to Mrs. Ann Council of Darlington County upon being named the 1996 South Carolina School Nurse of the Year and wish her the very best as a contender for the National Association of School Nurses' School Nurse of the Year Award.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Ann Council.
