A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING CHIEF SUMMARY COURT JUDGE J. OSCAR ZOBEL FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED RECORD OF JUDICIAL SERVICE AND EXPRESSING APPRECIATION FOR HIS TWENTY-SIX AND ONE-HALF YEARS AS A NEWBERRY COUNTY MAGISTRATE.

Whereas, James Oscar Zobel was born on May 24, 1923, in the Helena Community adjacent to the City of Newberry and within the County of Newberry, he being the son of Charles Julius Zobel, a native of Newberry County, and Nancy Guidette Zobel, a native of Brooklyn, New York; and

Whereas, the forebears of Charles Julius Zobel emigrated to America from Wurttemberg, Germany, and the forebears of the former Nancy Guidette emigrated to America from Italy; and

Whereas, J. Oscar Zobel, affectionally known as "Butch" Zobel, graduated from Newberry High School and attended Newberry College; and

Whereas, during World War II, Staff Sergeant Zobel served with distinction in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the China-Burma-India Theatre for twenty-eight months and was discharged on November 25, 1945, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; and

Whereas, J. Oscar Zobel was elected as Newberry County's Courthouse Magistrate in June, 1968, and began serving as Magistrate in January of 1969; and

Whereas, when the Magistrate's Court System became a part of the state's Unified Judicial System, Magistrate Zobel was appointed as Chief Summary Court Judge of the Newberry County Summary Courts; and

Whereas, Chief Summary Court Judge Zobel served as Prosperity Municipal Judge and as Assistant Newberry Municipal Court Judge for an extensive period of time; and

Whereas, Chief Judge Zobel retired as a Newberry County Magistrate on June 30, 1995, having served as a Summary Court Judge for twenty-six and one-half years; and

Whereas, Judge Zobel is married to the former Margaret Elizabeth Hollingsworth, and they have three children: James O. Zobel, Jr., of Prosperity, South Carolina; David Hollings Zobel of Glacier National Park, Montana; and Edwin Kent Zobel of Newberry, South Carolina; Judge Zobel has been a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer; and

Whereas, Judge Zobel has rendered distinguished service to his community, his county, his State, and his nation; his judicial service has been a credit and an asset to the State of South Carolina and its Judicial System and to the County of Newberry; and his outstanding service is deeply appreciated by the citizens of the County and City of Newberry. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Chief Summary Court Judge J. Oscar Zobel and commend him on his distinguished judicial record and express appreciation for his twenty-six and one-half years of outstanding service as a Newberry County Magistrate.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Judge J. Oscar Zobel.
