A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE MR. BUCK MICKEL OF GREENVILLE, ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S MOST DISTINGUISHED BUSINESS AND CIVIC LEADERS, FOR HIS FIFTY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE FLUOR CORPORATION AND ITS PREDECESSOR COMPANIES, INCLUDING DANIEL CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, UPON HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE FLUOR BOARD.

Whereas, Buck Mickel is one of South Carolina's most distinguished business and civic leaders, who is widely known throughout our state and nation as a man of tremendous ability, keen intelligence, and unquestioned integrity; and

Whereas, Mr. Mickel is a native of Elberton, Georgia, received his preparatory education in the public schools of Elberton and Atlanta, Georgia, and received a bachelor of science degree in Civil Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1947; and

Whereas, he served his country during World War II as a midshipman at the United States Maritime Academy and was a First Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers during the Korean War; and

Whereas, he joined Daniel Construction Company in 1948, became Vice President in 1958, President and General Manager in 1965 upon the death of Charles E. Daniel, and in 1974 was elected Chairman of the Daniel Construction Company Board of Trustees; and

Whereas, after Daniel Construction Company was acquired by the Fluor Corporation, Mr. Mickel served as Vice Chairman and President of the Fluor Corporation, Chairman of Fluor's Engineering and Construction Group, and Chairman and President of Daniel International Corporation; and

Whereas, he joined the board of trustees of the Fluor Corporation in 1977, and on December 31, 1997, retired from the board capping a remarkable career of fifty years of service to the Fluor Corporation and its predecessor companies; and

Whereas, in addition to his achievements with Fluor, he is also a highly respected civic and community leader who has served his fellowman with true spirit of public citizenship in a number of capacities including service as a Life Trustee of Clemson University and Converse College, a trustee of Brookgreen Gardens, a member of the Business Council, and a member of the Advisory Boards of the South Carolina Foundation of Independent Colleges and the University of South Carolina Business School; and

Whereas, he has received numerous awards and recognitions for his many contributions and achievements, including receipt of our state's highest honor, the "Order of the Palmetto", in 1977 and being named South Carolina's "Businessman of the Year" in 1983; and

Whereas, he is blessed with a large and wonderful family, including his lovely wife, Mrs. Minor Herndon Mickel, and three outstanding children, Minor Mickel Shaw, Buck Alston Mickel, and Charles Clark Mickel, who have all distinguished themselves in their own right; and

Whereas, South Carolina has been blessed through the years with gifted leaders such as Buck Mickel who have given freely of their considerable time, talents, and resources to their communities, state, and nation; and

Whereas, it is with a tremendous sense of appreciation that the House of Representatives take note of his accomplishments throughout his business career upon his retirement from the Fluor board and wish this truly special husband, father, grandfather, and friend godspeed in his every endeavor in his retirement years. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives hereby commend and congratulate Mr. Buck Mickel of Greenville, one of South Carolina's most distinguished business and civic leaders, for his fifty years of outstanding service to the Fluor Corporation and its predecessor companies, including Daniel Construction Company, upon his retirement from the Fluor board.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to

Mr. Mickel.
