A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING AND SALUTING PARK SEED COMPANY OF GREENWOOD FOR ITS "SEEDS IN SPACE II" PROGRAM AND COMMENDING THE COMPANY FOR ITS MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS OVER THE YEARS.

Whereas, the September 1997 launch of NASA shuttle Atlantis signaled a new phase of student outreach, and Park Seed Company of Greenwood was a proud partner in this great endeavor; and

Whereas, contained within the shuttle were over twenty pounds of tomato seeds, Rutgers California Improved, donated by Park Seed; these seeds were exposed to the vacuum of space for the duration of the ten-day flight; concurrently, another twenty pounds of tomato seeds were set to be lowered to the ocean floor, to be exposed to the pressures of "inner space" within NASA's underwater facility off Key Largo, Florida; finally, an additional twenty pounds of the seeds were to be maintained, as a control group, at the Park Seed Research Facility in Greenwood; and

Whereas, eventually the seeds are to be distributed to school classes at every level, as well as to other interested individuals who attend NASA conferences; the students will test the seed groups for germination results and growth characteristics, and the data will be collected and analyzed by scientists around the world; as part of its existing Internet site, Park Seed plans to include the results of all of these tests; and

Whereas, this is the M-A-R-S initiative, NASA's "Mission to America's Remarkable Students", proudly partnered by America's premier family-owned plant and seed company, Park Seed; and

Whereas, Park Seed is an integral to the success of Greater Greenwood and, indeed to the success of the Palmetto State's overall economy; it was a tremendous honor and privilege for Park Seed to be able to participate in this endeavor; Park Seed's involvement also brought honor and prestige to Greenwood and the entire State of South Carolina; and we are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize and salute Park Seed by this resolution. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognizes and salutes Park Seed Company of Greenwood for its "Seeds In Space II" Program and commends the company for its many accomplishments over the years.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Park Seed Company.
