RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING MRS. GEORGIA WALKER-HALLUMS OF GREENVILLE COUNTY FOR HER MANY CONTRIBUTIONS ENHANCING THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN HER COMMUNITY.
Whereas, Georgia Walker-Hallums attended Mt. Pleasant Elementary School and Sterling High School in Greenville and graduated from Greenville High School; she later attended Greenville Technical College and Furman University, taking courses in human relations; and
Whereas, she is a member of Reedy River Baptist Church; she has had a productive, meaningful working career and was employed as a chiropodist for Dr. F. A. Lubeen, as a courier for Ralph E. Loper Company, and as Director of Emergency Services for S.H.A.R.E., a community action agency which included Operation Warmth, Y-SHARE Camp, and Operation Shoe Horn; and
Whereas, after retiring from S.H.A.R.E. in the late 1980's, she has continued to work for S.H.A.R.E.; she has done homebound applications for the elderly and homebound recipients for the low income heating program; on December 1, 1997, she was called back to S.H.A.R.E. as coordinator for a program called Windows (i.e., Women's Initiatives, New Directions, and Opportunities for Work and Self-Sufficiency); presently she is Assistant Secretary of the Mount Pleasant Senior Citizen Program, Secretary of the Mount Pleasant Community Association, and a member of the Reedy River Mature Citizens; and
Whereas, upon retiring, she took a home health course through the Red Cross and is now employed by Internists Associates as an environmental technicians assistant; and
Whereas, she helped organize a day care center at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in the early 1960's and most recently, helped organize the Mt. Pleasant Senior Citizens Program; and
Whereas, she has had many civic involvements, both past and present, over the years including, among others, the following: the NAACP, the Negro Council of Women, Democratic Women of South Carolina, National Baptist Convention, and Holy Spring Order of Eastern Star #31; and
Whereas, her accomplishments, both past and present include, among other things, the following: past secretary, Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church; past secretary, Amici Zeta Phi Beta Sorority; and field minister, Local Congress of Christian Education; and
Whereas, she has received numerous awards over the years including, among other things, the following: Outstanding Award in the Field of Missionary from the Baptist Education and Missionary Convention of South Carolina; Certificate for Significant Services to the Community as a Senior Volunteer from the Retired Senior Volunteer Program for South Carolina; and Distinguished Certificate for Team Effort and Expert Ability while serving as a Coordinator for the Hallums/Austin Family Reunion; and
Whereas, she is very active in her church, is interested in attending workshops pertaining to Christian education, and loves working with elderly citizens and children; her main goal, at which she has been highly successful, is helping people to help themselves; and
Whereas, she is a dynamic, loving, dedicated person; she is respected, admired, and loved by all who know her; she has given freely of her time, talents, energy, knowledge, resources, and wisdom throughout her life so that others may benefit and have a better life; and she is greatly deserving of recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognizes and commends Mrs. Georgia Walker-Hallums of Greenville County for her many contributions enhancing the quality of life in her community.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Walker-Hallums.
