A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MRS. BRENDA NETTLES OF BLACKVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA, A MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH/SCIENCE TEACHER AT BLACKVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL IN BARNWELL COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT 19, UPON BEING NAMED 1998 RECIPIENT OF THE CENTRAL SAVANNAH RIVER AREA CHAPTER OF SIGMA XI MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH/SCIENCE TEACHER OF THE YEAR.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are very pleased to learn that Mrs. Brenda Nettles of Blackville has been chosen the 1998 recipient of the Central Savannah River Area Chapter of Sigma XI Middle School Math/Science Teacher of the Year; and

Whereas, she is a teacher at Blackville Middle School and also at Macedonia Elementary School in Barnwell County School District 19, who was chosen because of the many different activities in mathematics and science that she conducts with her students, who learn from hands-on, real-life experiences and who also won the Central Savannah River Area Science Forum Overall Science Award for Middle Schools in April, 1998; and

Whereas, Mrs. Nettles has worked with Clemson University on a Host Plant Suitability Project that has been showcased for Excellence in Science and Math by the South Carolina Department of Education in 1995; and

Whereas, she was the recipient of the South Carolina Environmental Education Award sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources in 1996; and

Whereas, Mrs. Nettles received funding of $300 from Westinghouse Savannah River Company Excellence in Teaching in Science and Math Mini-Grant in April, 1998, as well as secured funding for the establishment of a Butterfly Garden at Macedonia Elementary (Blackville/Hilda) through Clemson University in May, 1997, and has been the primary person responsible for the development of the outdoor Environmental Laboratory (M.A.R.S.H.) at Macedonia Elementary School; and

Whereas, Brenda Nettles is unquestionably a role model who creates high and positive expectations for her students and is a person who inspires students and colleagues alike and is a positive asset for our local school students; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, would like to publicly congratulate and honor this outstanding and gifted lady on her receipt of this truly deserved award. Now therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives congratulate Mrs. Brenda Nettles of Blackville, a middle school teacher at Blackville Middle School in Barnwell County School District 19, on being named recipient of the Central Savannah River Area Chapter of Sigma XI 1998 Middle School Math/Science Teacher of the Year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Nettles.
