A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING CLEMSON UNIVERSITY ALL-AMERICA LINEBACKER ANTHONY SIMMONS OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY ON BEING SELECTED ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE FIRST ROUND OF THE 1998 NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE (NFL) DRAFT TO PLAY FOR THE SEATTLE SEAHAWKS, AND WISHING HIM GREAT SUCCESS AS AN NFL PLAYER.

Whereas, the Seattle Seahawks used their fifteenth pick in the first round on the first day of the 1998 National Football League (NFL) draft to acquire the services of Clemson University All-America linebacker Anthony Simmons of Spartanburg County; and

Whereas, Anthony Simmons is the first Spartanburg-area football player drafted in the NFL's first round since fellow Spartanburg High School and Clemson alumnus Steve Fuller was the twenty-third pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in the late 1970's; and

Whereas, Anthony Simmons is regarded as an extraordinary athlete with tremendous speed and as a superb play-maker; his fastest forty-yard dash is 4.45 seconds; he finished third on Clemson's career list with 486 tackles; he was a consensus All-America at his position for the 1997 football season, and he was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference choice at his position three times; and

Whereas, he boosted the success of the Clemson Tigers football program, and he brought honor by his abilities and personal accomplishments to Spartanburg County and the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, it is indeed a privilege for the members of the General Assembly to be able to recognize and honor Anthony Simmons in this special way. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, heartily congratulates Clemson University All-America linebacker Anthony Simmons of Spartanburg County on being selected on the first day of the first round of the 1998 NFL draft to play for the Seattle Seahawks and wishes him great success as an NFL player.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Simmons.
