TO RECOGNIZE ELZA M. ALTERMAN FOR HER SUCCESSES AS A BUSINESSWOMAN AND HER CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE VITALITY OF DOWNTOWN CHARLESTON, UPON THE CLOSING OF HER KING STREET SHOP, ELZA'S WOMEN'S APPAREL, AFTER FORTY-SEVEN YEARS OF BUSINESS.
Whereas, Elza M. Alterman of Charleston opened Elza's Women's Apparel forty-seven years ago in 1951; and
Whereas, the fashion boutique was an instant success, becoming both a local institution as well as a destination for shoppers outside of Charleston; and
Whereas, the shop thrived on Charleston's King Street and not only survived the period of waning retail business downtown, but also anchored the revitalization of downtown shopping in Charleston;
Whereas, the historic district is now enjoying a retailing boom, largely due to fiercely loyal business owners like Elza and the fiercely loyal clientele she cultivated through her impeccable taste in fashion, natural flair for business, and enthusiastic love of people; and
Whereas, while her physical presence on King Street will be greatly missed upon the closing of Elza's, she leaves a hard-earned legacy of success and vitality; and
Whereas, she deserves to spend the next forty-seven years doing some leisurely traveling and pursuing other personal goals. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize Elza M. Alterman for her successes as a businesswoman and her contributions to the vitality of Downtown Charleston, upon the closing of her King Street shop, Elza's Women's Apparel, after forty-seven years of business.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Elza M. Alterman.
