A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE THE DARLINGTON RACEWAY AS IT CELEBRATES FIFTY YEARS OF NASCAR RACING IN THE SOUTHERN 500 AND TO HONOR THE RACEWAY ON ITS FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY FOR THE YEARS OF HISTORY, TRADITION, SPORTS MEMORIES, AND ENTERTAINMENT IT HAS PROVIDED TO THE CITIZENS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, TO THE NATION, AND TO RACING FANS EVERYWHERE AND THANK ITS MANAGEMENT FOR A JOB WELL DONE.

Whereas, the Darlington Raceway was completed in 1950 and the first race was held there on September 4, 1950; and

Whereas, the track was built by Harold Brasington, a resident of Darlington County; and

Whereas, the president of the Darlington Raceway is currently Jim Hunter and the Chairman of its Board is Representative Woody McKay; and

Whereas, Darlington Raceway is owned by the International Speedway Corporation and Jim France is the corporation's president; and

Whereas, Darlington is "Nascar's proving ground" and Nascar's original Super Speedway; and

Whereas, this track is known as Nascar's toughest to race on and, in fact, is known throughout the racing world as being "too tough to tame"; and

Whereas, Darlington is part of the Southern 500 Racing Circuit and every driver wants to win here because it is the toughest track in the Southern 500; and

Whereas, Darlington Raceway has proven itself time and again, in so many ways, as a strong corporate supporter of its community and of its State; and

Whereas, Darlington Raceway is filled with history, tradition, and heritage; and

Whereas, its history and tradition are part and parcel of the heritage of South Carolina; and

Whereas, the Darlington Raceway's fiftieth anniversary will be held on September 5, 1999, to celebrate fifty years of Nascar racing in the Southern 500. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly recognizes the Darlington Raceway in Darlington, South Carolina, as it celebrates fifty years of Nascar racing in the Southern 500 and honors the raceway on its fiftieth anniversary for the years of history, tradition, sports memories, and entertainment it has provided to the citizens of South Carolina, to the nation, and to racing fans everywhere and thanks its management for a job well done.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Jim Hunter, President of the Darlington Raceway and to Jim France, President of the International Speedway Corporation.
