A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING DR. SYLVIA POOLE SWINTON OF RICHLAND COUNTY ON BEING HONORED BY THE ALLEN UNIVERSITY BOOSTERS NETWORK DURING ITS ALUMNI BANQUET ON APRIL 3, 1999.

Whereas, Dr. Sylvia Poole Swinton received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1931, her Masters of Science in Education from Indiana University in 1942, and her Doctorate in Education from Indiana University in 1956; and

Whereas, she has completed postdoctoral studies at Indiana University, Michigan State University, Temple University, and Boston University; and

Whereas, Dr. Swinton began her illustrious career as a teacher at Waverly Elementary School in the City of Columbia; and

Whereas, she has served as Principal of Waverly Elementary School and held professorships at Allen University, Morris College, South Carolina State College, and New York University, and has served as an interim President for Allen University; and

Whereas, Dr. Swinton, born in Hartsville, South Carolina, is well known for her unselfish and dedicated service to the African Methodist Episcopal Church, her community, our State and our nation; and

Whereas, for her many years of humanitarian service, the Allen University Boosters Network will honor Dr. Swinton during its Alumni banquet on April 3, 1999. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby congratulate Dr. Sylvia Poole Swinton of Richland County on being honored by the Allen University Boosters Network during its Alumni banquet on April 3, 1999.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Sylvia Poole Swinton.
