TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THREE MEMBERS OF THE SENECA HIGH SCHOOL "MAT CATS" BOYS WRESTLING TEAM, DERRICK JOHNSON, TONY BUTLER, AND GREG COUTU, ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR WINNING THE 1998-99 CLASS AAA STATE WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP IN THEIR RESPECTIVE WEIGHT CLASS.
Whereas, three members of the Seneca High School "Mat Cats" Boys Wrestling Team captured the 1998-99 Class AAA State Wrestling Championship in their respective weight class; and
Whereas, senior Derrick Johnson, with an overall record of 46-2, defeated James Parker of Lugoff-Elgin High School to capture the 1998-99 Class AAA State Wrestling Championship in the 103-pound weight class; and
Whereas, wrestling his first year as a senior, Tony Butler, with an overall record of 31-12, defeated Bryan Bearden of Pickens High School to capture the 1998-99 Class AAA State Wrestling Championship in the 119-pound weight class; and
Whereas, senior Greg Coutu, with an overall record of 40-7, defeated Peter Hemingway of Lugoff-Elgin High School to capture the 1998-99 Class AAA State Wrestling Championship in the 140-pound weight class, and became the first two-time state champion in Seneca wrestling history; and
Whereas, this season was the first occasion Seneca High School crowned three state champs in one season, and the "Mat Cats" were guided throughout their successful season by Coach Andrew T. Smyth; and
Whereas, the Seneca High School Wrestling Team "Mat Cats" epitomized the spirit of champions due to their competitive spirit, dedication, and desire to succeed. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extend their congratulations to three members of the Seneca High School "Mat Cats" Boys Wrestling Team, Derrick Johnson, Tony Butler, and Greg Coutu, on the occasion of their winning the 1998-99 Class AAA State Wrestling Championship in their respective weight class.
Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be presented to Seneca High School Wrestling Coach Andrew T. Smyth and to his 1998-99 "Mat Cat" champions, Derrick Johnson, Tony Butler, and Greg Coutu.
