A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING THE PHYLLIS WHEATLEY ASSOCIATION FOR EIGHTY YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE GREENVILLE COMMUNITY AND SURROUNDING AREAS.

Whereas, the Phyllis Wheatley Association has provided social welfare services for the people of Greenville and surrounding areas for the past eighty years; and

Whereas, this outstanding agency has offered, or caused to be provided, health and welfare, social, cultural, and spiritual opportunities for African-Americans of Greenville since the agency was founded by the late Mrs. Hatties Logan Duckett in 1919; and

Whereas, as an example of the dedicated service provided by the agency, it is noted that the first public library for African-Americans in Greenville County was established at the Phyllis Wheatley Center; the agency also provided meeting and banquet rooms for various functions; these rooms were utilized by sororities, fraternities, and civic and social organizations; and

Whereas, during the early 1960's, the Phyllis Wheatley Association, in cooperation with the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce, provided classes and seminars which helped to prepare African-Americans to enter some of the jobs that had not been previously available to them; and

Whereas, when Greenville County schools were integrated in 1970, the executive director of Phyllis Wheatley worked closely with school officials and other interested people to help make the transition as smooth as possible; and

Whereas, the Phyllis Wheatley Association helped greatly in effecting the transition from segregation to integration and is presently providing services that are needed and interesting to all people; and

Whereas, the association moved into a new facility at 335 Greenacre Road in Greenville in June, 1977; this facility was equipped with classrooms, offices, lockers, shower rooms, a banquet room, a fully-equipped kitchen, and a gymnatorium; and

Whereas, the association is presently constructing a new Education Building to be completed in July, 1999; and

Whereas, in recognition of the association's eightieth anniversary, a gala celebration is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 11, 1999 at the Hyatt Regency Greenville; this event promises to be both entertaining and educational, as it celebrates eight decades of caring, committed service to the community and countless accomplishments. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognizes and commends the Phyllis Wheatley Association for eighty years of service to the Greenville community and surrounding areas.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Phyllis Wheatley Association.
