A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING THE LIFE AND GOOD WORKS OF JOHN BERNARDIN, SR., OF COLUMBIA AND EXPRESSING THE APPRECIATION AND RESPECT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR THE CONTRIBUTIONS HE MADE TO THE MIDLANDS COMMUNITY, ESPECIALLY ITS MOST FRAGILE SECTOR, ITS NEEDY CHILDREN, DURING HIS LIFETIME.

Whereas, the General Assembly pauses in its deliberations to honor the memory of one of its beloved native sons, John Angelo Bernardin, Sr., who passed away after a short illness on July 15, 1998; and

Whereas, Mr. Bernardin was a first-generation American born to Lina and the late Severino Bernardin who had immigrated to South Carolina from northern Italy; and

Whereas, Mr. Bernardin was a graduate of St. Peter's School, University High, and the University of South Carolina. He was employed by the Thompson Dental Company for forty-one years. He was an outstanding dental supply salesman and was known in the dental community all over South Carolina. At the time of his death he was vice president and sales manager of Thompson Dental Company, a company which has been an important part of the Columbia business economy since 1914; and

Whereas, Mr. Bernardin was truly a man who loved and was devoted to his family. He was married to Elizabeth "Libby" Doggett Bernardin, an English professor at the University of South Carolina for thirty-nine years; together they raised three children, John A. "Andy" Bernardin of Lexington, Bonnie Bernardin Papajohn of Kernersville, North Carolina, and Elizabeth Bernardin Fowble of Mobile, Alabama. Mr. Bernardin's extended family includes a daughter-in-law, Lisa Garnett Bernardin, and two sons-in-law, Pete S. Papajohn and Dr. Coleman D. Fowble. He was the proud and loving grandfather to seven grandchildren, Elizabeth and Christopher Bernardin, Allie and Gus Papajohn, and Coleman, John, and Cecilia Fowble. Mr. Bernardin's mother, Lina and a sister, Anita Bernardin Owens Orf, survive him as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins throughout North America and northern Italy; and

Whereas, the Bernardin family is well known locally and nationally because of Mr. Bernardin's first cousin, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin who, when he passed away in November, 1996, was the Archbishop of Chicago and the most senior cardinal in the United States. In the same manner as his well-respected cousin, John Bernardin was a strong proponent of his faith and was an active member of his church, St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church; and

Whereas, Mr. Bernardin had a warm, engaging, generous, and friendly nature and he made a tremendous contribution to his community by helping the most needy children of Columbia. He served on the board of directors of the Nurturing Center, a day treatment facility for abused and neglected children and their parents, which counsels parents and teaches the skills needed to be an effective parent, and serves the abused children from the ages of birth to five years old with programs to help the children thrive, meet the challenges of growing up, and ready them for school; and

Whereas, Mr. Bernardin also served on the board of directors of Palmetto Place which was founded in 1977 as an emergency shelter for abused, abandoned, and neglected children. Mr. Bernardin served on this board for many years; in fact in 1984 he hired the current director, Betty McCall; and

Whereas, in January, 1999, Thompson Dental Company held a charity golf tournament in Charleston in memory of its respected former employee, John Bernardin. The tournament raised $20,007 which was recently presented to Palmetto Place as a contribution to their capital campaign. This money will aid Palmetto Place in the construction of its new shelter, and the young boys suite will be named in Mr. Bernardin's honor; and

Whereas, the director of Palmetto Place has stated that what Thompson Dental Company has done in Mr. Bernardin's memory is a small token of what he has meant to so many people in the community; everyone loved him and he never met a person who did not find him engaging, caring, and generous; and

Whereas, Mr. Bernardin made helping the needy children of the Midlands an integral part of his life's work and this legacy will be made permanent in the new Palmetto Place facility. Now therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize the life and good works of John Bernardin, Sr., of Columbia and express their appreciation and respect for the contributions he made to the Midlands community and to its most fragile sector, its needy children, during his lifetime.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Libby Bernardin.
