A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE NEWBERRY COLLEGE INDIANS BASEBALL TEAM FOR WINNING THE 1999 SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP AND TO COMMEND THE TEAM FOR ITS OUTSTANDING SEASON.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to learn that the Newberry College Indians baseball team won the 1999 South Atlantic Conference baseball championship, defeating Presbyterian College by a score of 15 to 11; and

Whereas, the South Atlantic Conference is composed of eight colleges located in the two Carolinas and Tennessee. The North Carolina schools are Catawba College in Salisbury, Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, and Wingate University in Wingate; the South Carolina institutions are Newberry College in Newberry and Presbyterian College in Clinton; and the Tennessee college is Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City; and

Whereas, the Indians worked hard and were dedicated and committed to succeeding as a team, and their record of achievement shows the tremendous success of this effort; and

Whereas, this fine group of student athletes are predominantly the products of large and small communities in South Carolina, while some members of the team hail from Georgia, Florida, Massachusetts, and South Africa; and

Whereas, Newberry College, founded in 1856, has a rich tradition of excellence in academics, athletics, and achievement; and

Whereas, under the able leadership of Head Coach Tim Medlin and very capable assistant coaches, Tom Eachues, P.K. Fuller, and Kevin Kunkle, the Newberry College Indians compiled an outstanding record of achievement during the 1999 season which will be difficult for future teams to surpass; and

Whereas, the conduct of these student athletes in the classroom and on and off the baseball diamond has brought deserved credit not only upon them and Newberry College, but upon the City and County of Newberry and the State of South Carolina as well; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and congratulate the Newberry College Indians baseball team upon winning this truly deserved South Atlantic Conference baseball championship. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate the Newberry College baseball team for winning the 1999 South Atlantic Conference baseball championship and commend them for this outstanding accomplishment.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach Tim Medlin and his assistant coaches, Dr. Peter L. French, President of Newberry College, and each of the members of the 1999 championship baseball team.
