Whereas, playing basketball in a league develops many positive qualities in the youthful team members; it develops their ability to work hard and persevere, their power to see a goal and work towards it, their cooperative spirit and teamwork, and it helps to promote the self-esteem of the players; and
Whereas, the Hemingway Midgets boys basketball team developed these important qualities and succeeded in meeting the challenges of their recreation commission league by winning the games that made them the Williamsburg County champions; then, this team, composed of boys fourteen years old and under, went on to win the Eastern District Championship of the South Carolina Recreation and Parks Association; and
Whereas, the team proudly continued their championship streak as they won the 1998-99 State Championship for the Midgets Division; and
Whereas, this team of young men was honored further by being invited to participate in the Junior Hornets regional tournament put on by the Charlotte Hornets Professional Basketball Organization; this competition, held the end of March, consisted of attending a professional men's basketball game in Charlotte and playing in the regional tournament held at the team's practice facility in Tega Cay, South Carolina, against recreational league team champions from Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee which the Hemingway Midgets won; and
Whereas, the boys on this team, at their young age, exhibit natural athletic ability, teamwork, and dedication; qualities which will help them succeed in life and all of its challenges; and
Whereas, the Hemingway Midgets boys basketball team consists of Damian Anderson, Jamison Anderson, Mack Goss, Kelly Montanez, Franklin Nesmith, Charles Smith, Riki Weston and Karim Williams; their outstanding coaches are Will Brown, Moses Flegler, Stanley Pasley, and Ricky Weston; and
Whereas, in recognition of the many hours of practice, hard work, and dedication put forth by the entire team and its coaches, the members of the General Assembly wish to publicly recognize and congratulate this outstanding group of young men upon their tremendous victory and wish them continued success in the future. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That, by this resolution, the members of the General Assembly extend their enthusiastic congratulations to the Hemingway Midgets boys basketball team for winning the 1998-99 state championship in the State Recreation and Parks Association basketball league for boys fourteen and under and for winning the Junior Hornets regional tournament put on by the Charlotte Hornets Professional Basketball Organization.
