A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE DR. CARL ALAN CLAYTON, DEAN OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, SALKEHATCHIE REGIONAL CAMPUS, ON HIS RETIREMENT AFTER THIRTY YEARS OF DEVOTED SERVICE TO THE SCHOOL AND THE SALKEHATCHIE COMMUNITY, TO PUBLICLY RECOGNIZE HIS EFFORTS IN MAKING USC SALKEHATCHIE THE EXCELLENT LEARNING INSTITUTION IT IS, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HIM FOR A HEALTHY AND FRUITFUL RETIREMENT.

Whereas, Dr. Carl Alan Clayton, a native of North Carolina, completed a bachelors degree in business in 1967 and a master's degree in economics and business in 1968 at Appalachian State Teachers College, and his doctoral degree in educational administration from the University of South Carolina, Columbia in 1981; and

Whereas, shortly after graduation in 1968, he accepted a position at the University of South Carolina, Florence, now known as Francis Marion University. Two years later, in 1970, Dr. Clayton moved to Salkehatchie when he became the dean of the University of South Carolina, Salkehatchie; and

Whereas, the Salkehatchie campus was established in 1965, and Dr. Clayton has been a part of its history for most of the institution's existence; and

Whereas, Dr. Clayton and his wife, Barbara, became an integral part of the campus and the Salkehatchie community. His two children, Alan and Michelle, both graduates of the University of South Carolina, grew up in the Salkehatchie family; and

Whereas, under Dr. Clayton's enthusiastic leadership, Salkehatchie is one of the fastest growing campuses in the University system. It consists of nineteen buildings on over two hundred acres on two campus sites in Salkehatchie and Walterboro, and it reaches several thousand students through its credit, continuing education, and community service programs; and

Whereas, Dr. Clayton is well respected and admired by his colleagues. To quote Miles Loadholt, a member of the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees: "Under Carl's leadership, great things have been accomplished at Salkehatchie. The Walterboro campus was added, there has been a great increase in students and faculty, and the academic programs have been improved and expanded. Carl will certainly be missed, but he will be fondly remembered for all of the accomplishments at Salkehatchie under his leadership"; and

Whereas, Dr. Clayton, no doubt, will be very active in his retirement, as he restores old cars, enjoys gardening, and works on the family farm in North Carolina left to him by his parents. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate Dr. Carl Alan Clayton, Dean of the University of South Carolina, Salkehatchie regional campus, on his retirement after thirty years of devoted service to the school and the Salkehatchie community, publicly recognize his efforts at making USC Salkehatchie the excellent learning institution it is, and extend to him best wishes for a healthy and fruitful retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Carl Alan Clayton.
