A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR CORPORAL MARVIN GILLIARD, COMMUNITY PATROL OFFICER OF THE GREENVILLE CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT, FOR HIS DEDICATION AND WORK WITH THE PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY THE CHILDREN, OF THE NICHOLTOWN AND JESSE JACKSON TOWNHOMES COMMUNITIES.

Whereas, Corporal Marvin Gilliard has been a community patrol officer for the Greenville City Police Department in the Nicholtown and Jesse Jackson Townhomes communities for the past twenty-two months; and

Whereas, Corporal Gilliard's philosophy of his job is built upon his experiences with policemen when he was growing up in Anderson County. Among the vivid memories from his childhood are the impressions a police officer could make on a youngster; he knew he wanted to be like the officers who were kind to him as he grew up; and

Whereas, building trust, teaching right from wrong, and making a positive impression on the children are keys to the corporal's work. Each spring he volunteers his time as a coach in the police youth softball league and he speaks at drug awareness programs held at schools throughout the county; and

Whereas, Corporal Gilliard comes from a family with law enforcement ties; an uncle, Trenton, New Jersey's police chief, Louis Irvin, died on the job sixteen years ago; Marvin's wife, Lisa, works for the Department of Justice; his brother, Stephon, formerly a police officer, is now a teacher and minister; and another brother, Warren, is a public safety officer at Greenville Technical College; and

Whereas, Corporal Gilliard is a big man with a big heart who makes a big impression; he is five foot eleven and weighs two hundred and sixty pounds. He enjoys weightlifting, travel, bass fishing, and being a sports fan-- especially of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly recognize and honor Corporal Marvin Gilliard, Community Patrol Officer of the Greenville City Police Department, for his dedication and work with the people, especially the children, of the Nicholtown and Jesse Jackson Townhomes communities.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Corporal Marvin Gilliard.
