EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF THE LATE MATILDA "TILLIE" FORRESTER DUNSTON OF NORTH CHARLESTON.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the death on February 9, 2000, of Matilda "Tillie" Forrester Dunston of North Charleston; and

Whereas, Mrs. Dunston, a former teacher, principal, and superintendent, realized her calling as an educator after substitute teaching at Oak Terrace Elementary School in the 1940's; and

Whereas, Mrs. Dunston, a graduate, magna cum laude, of the Baptist College of Charleston who took a master's degree in school administration from The Citadel, taught at Remount Road Elementary School, a school later named for her, and in 1976, switched to administration and served as principal of the school; and

Whereas, her love of children and her profession led her in retirement to remain in close contact with the school she served, attending many awards ceremonies and functions; and

Whereas, Mrs. Dunston was a member on the visiting committee to review four Berkeley County Schools for accreditation, co-authored the professional ethics training module for paraprofessionals in the county school district, served on the Charleston County Planning Board, the Juvenile Court Board, helped to establish the Citizen Advisory Council and the By-Laws Committee for the City of North Charleston, and was instrumental in setting up the first North Charleston voting precinct, serving as its secretary; and

Whereas, her love of children and the high calling of the profession of education led her to endow a scholarship fund for teachers at the Baptist College of Charleston; and

Whereas, because of her devotion to children, the cause of education, and the Lowcountry community, Mrs. Dunston was recognized when she received the Order of the Palmetto from a grateful State, was a recipient of the Golden Deeds Award of the Exchange Club of North Charleston, and was named to the Hall of Fame of the Charleston Federation of Women's Club; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberation so that they might add their voices to the chorus of expressions of loss and sympathy at the passing of so distinguished a South Carolinian. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, express their sympathy to the family and many friends of the late Matilda "Tillie" Forrester Dunston of North Charleston.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Matilda Forrester Dunston.
