SALUTING AND THANKING DR. ROBERT E. ALEXANDER FOR HIS OUTSTANDING AND DEDICATED SERVICE AS CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA AIKEN, AND WISHING HIM SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS FOLLOWING HIS RETIREMENT.
Whereas, Dr. Robert E. Alexander was appointed Chancellor of the University of South Carolina Aiken (USCA) in 1983, and, from the beginning of his tenure in that office, he used his management expertise and experience with the partnership concept to magnify USCA's vital role in the region and the Palmetto State; and
Whereas, strong community roots and an enduring commitment to excellence in every endeavor have been the hallmarks of Dr. Alexander's career in higher education; and
Whereas, growth and progress have been the cornerstones of his tenure at USCA; undergraduate enrollment grew from 1,818 to 3,065 in the 1999-2000 school year, and USCA now offers one of the lowest student/faculty ratios of four-year state-assisted institutions in South Carolina and has one of the lowest administrative overhead costs for four-year public institutions in the State; and
Whereas, Dr. Alexander will retire as Chancellor of USCA on June 30, 2000; and
Whereas, he has meant much to the students, faculty, and staff of USCA for many years and has brought South Carolina higher education to new heights; and
Whereas, we are delighted to have the opportunity to recognize him in this special manner. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, salutes and thanks Dr. Robert E. Alexander for his outstanding and dedicated service as Chancellor of the University of South Carolina Aiken and wishes him success and happiness following his retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Alexander.
