A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE HEARTFELT THANKS OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO DR. W. DUKE HUCKS, SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION FOR PICKENS COUNTY, FOR MORE THAN THIRTY-FIVE YEARS OF DEDICATION TO PUBLIC EDUCATION IN THIS STATE AS TEACHER, PRINCIPAL, AND SUPERINTENDENT, AND WISHING HIM A WELL-DESERVED AND HARD-EARNED RELAXING RETIREMENT.

Whereas, Dr. W. Duke Hucks retires as Superintendent of Education for Pickens County on June 30, 2000; and

Whereas, his six-year tenure as superintendent caps a professional education career of more than thirty-five years; and

Whereas, he served in the classroom early in that tenure, at Pleasant Hill, Pageland, and Hemingway high schools, then served as principal at both Hemingway and Hartsville high schools; and

Whereas, before culminating his contribution to public education as Pickens Superintendent of Education, he was drafted to head School District 55 in Laurens County; and

Whereas, Dr. Hucks has played a vital role in the education profession generally as board member and President of the South Carolina Association of School Administrators, board member of South Carolina Association of School Superintendents and Partnership for Academic Career Education (PACE), and past president of the South Carolina Secondary Principals Association and the South Carolina High School League; and

Whereas, the schools under his leadership have earned consistently top scores in SAT and PACT results and been recognized repeatedly as incentive reward winners; and

Whereas, he has still found time to contribute to his community serving as administrative board member of First United Methodist Church of Easley, President of Pickens-Liberty Lions Club and Easley Rotary Club, and board member of Pickens County United Way and the Salvation Army; and

Whereas, he and his wife, Angie, look forward to a quieter pace and more time with children Andrea, a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina and Billy, a Clemson graduate. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the House of Representatives hereby express the heartfelt thanks of the State of South Carolina to Dr. W. Duke Hucks, Superintendent of Education for Pickens County, for more than thirty-five years of dedication to public education in this State as teacher, principal, and superintendent and wish him a well-deserved and hard-earned relaxing retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. W. Duke Hucks.
