A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND HEARTILY CONGRATULATE THE WINTHROP UNIVERSITY EAGLES BASKETBALL TEAM ON ITS OUTSTANDING SEASON, ITS BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP, AND ITS INVITATION TO THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION TOURNAMENT.

Whereas, under the leadership of Coach Gregg Marshall, a native of South Carolina, the Winthrop University Eagles Basketball Team has achieved a level of distinction heretofore unmatched by any Winthrop University Basketball Team by winning the 1999 Big South Conference Championship and the 1999 Big South Conference Tournament; and

Whereas, the Winthrop University Eagles Basketball Team by this achievement has secured a first-time-ever berth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association annual tournament of the nation's sixty-four finest teams in Division I, known throughout the country as "March Madness"; and

Whereas, the 1999 Winthrop University Eagles completed their season with a 21-7 record, reversing the previous year's 7-20 showing, defying the predictions of sports and analysts and prognosticators; and

Whereas, throughout the season, the members of the Winthrop University Eagles, under the guidance and mentoring of the entire Eagles' coaching staff, exhibited the qualities of tenacity, teamwork, and sportsmanship that are the goals of student-athletes everywhere; and

Whereas, by their individual and collective achievements, the Winthrop Eagles and its coaching staff have brought national attention and national acclaim to Winthrop University, the City of Rock Hill, York County, and the entire State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, hereby commend and heartily congratulate the Winthrop University Eagles Basketball Team and its coaching staff on its outstanding season, for winning the 1999 Big South Conference Championship, and the 1999 Big South Conference Tournament, and for being invited to compete in the 1999 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Tournament in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Be it further resolved that the Eagles are extended the very best wishes of the entire State of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Winthrop University Eagles Basketball Team and Winthrop University President Anthony J. DiGiorgio.
