A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MRS. MARY HAMILTON LOSTETTER OF LUGOFF, A MATH TEACHER AT LUGOFF-ELGIN HIGH SCHOOL, UPON BEING NAMED SOUTH CAROLINA'S TEACHER OF THE YEAR FOR THE 1999-2000 SCHOOL YEAR.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are very proud to learn that Mrs. Mary Hamilton Lostetter has been chosen South Carolina's Teacher of the Year for the 1999-2000 school year; and

Whereas, Mrs. Lostetter came from a home which was at the poverty level and, as the oldest of five children, at an early age took responsibility for caring for her siblings, thus leading to her first experiences with teaching; and

Whereas, she found school to be a refuge and worked hard to achieve success in math, even though she thought she had no hope of going to college; and

Whereas, in her senior year in high school, she received a scholarship to Akron University which enabled her to pursue a teaching career now spanning twenty-five years; and

Whereas, currently, she teaches math for grades nine through twelve at Lugoff-Elgin High School and recalls with understandable pride many stories of student success including a potential high school dropout who slept during his first day in her Honors Geometry class; then, through her mentoring and encouragement, became the first in his family to graduate from high school and today is a twenty-four year old graduate of Yale University; and

Whereas, she views teaching as "her gift" which she freely shares with her students by encouraging them with innovative techniques and use of technology in the classroom; with her community by participating and facilitating many church, social, and civic activities; and with her fellow teachers by serving as Math Department Chairman, applying for and receiving grants to initiate computer labs and programs, and teaching classes for other teachers during her planning period so each would have a planning period of his or her own; and

Whereas, Mrs. Lostetter is unquestionably a role model who challenges her students in order to help them achieve their highest potential and inspires students and colleagues alike; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution would like to publicly congratulate and honor this outstanding and gifted teacher on her receipt of this truly deserved award. Now therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby congratulate Mrs. Mary Hamilton Lostetter of Lugoff, a math teacher at Lugoff-Elgin High School, upon being named South Carolina's Teacher of the Year for the 1999-2000 school year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Mary Hamilton Lostetter.
