TO CONGRATULATE THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA SPARTANBURG RIFLES MEN'S SOCCER TEAM FOR ITS OUTSTANDING 1998 SEASON AND RECORD OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly note with pride that the University of South Carolina Spartanburg Men's Soccer Team, the "Rifles", completed a record breaking 1998 season with a 23-1-0 record, the highest winning percentage in all divisions of NCAA Men's Soccer, and set the NCAA Division II record for wins in a season; and
Whereas, the Rifles were runners-up in the NCAA Division II Tournament and set school and conference records by winning twenty-three consecutive games, and, in making its seventh NCAA tournament appearance in the 1990s, it joins the elite company of just four teams in the United States which have equaled this record; and
Whereas, the Rifles in 1998 won the Peach Belt Athletic Conference regular season for the second consecutive year and have won twenty consecutive games over PBAC opponents and have not lost to a PBAC opponent since November, 1996; and
Whereas, the Rifles, under the inspired coaching of Greg Hooks, who has been named PBAC Coach of the Year and South Region Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season, placed two players on the National Small College Athletic Association All-America First team, one on the GTE Academic All-America Third team, five players on the All-PBAC team, and for the second consecutive year, the PBAC Player of the Year has come from this team; and
Whereas, the incredible record of the success of this team is a tribute to the hard work of dedicated and skilled scholar athletes and the coaches who lead them, and their efforts are worthy of the heartiest congratulations from all South Carolinians. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That by this resolution, the members of the General Assembly congratulate the University of South Carolina Spartanburg Rifles Men's Soccer Team and its coaches for the team's outstanding 1998 season and record of accomplishments.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach Greg Hooks, Men's Soccer Coach at the University of South Carolina Spartanburg.
